Abstract

Article on Micucci's, an Italian grocery on India Street in Portland, established in 1949 by Leo Micucci, and run today by his widow, Iris, their son, Rick, and daughter, Sherene. Across town, on Riverside Street, other family members run the 40,000 square-foot warehouse and wholesale end of the firm. In the late 1940s, Leo, a young boxer on the New England circuit, used to drive to Boston to get specialty items his Italian mother couldn't find in Berlin, New Hampshire. Soon, Leo was making grocery runs for neighbors and others along the route. By the time he retired from his eight-year boxing career and settled in Portland, Leo decided he was suited for the grocery business, and established the store.
