Abstract

"North by East" piece reporting that Raymond Fogler started the University of Maine Foundation in 1935 to accommodate the wishes of a potential university donor who wanted to give $750 but didn't want the state to have anything to do with it. The foundation, which now has assets of $41 million and is one of the oldest public university foundations in New England. This year the foundation received $1.8 million, the largest bequest in its history, from Grace and Edward Cutting of Rockport, who were in the blueberry business. Fogler, a former president of the W. T. Grant Co., is now 102 and lives in Exeter with his daughter, Ruth Fogler Goff.
