Abstract
"North by East" piece on: a storm that tore away the last three masts on the Luther Little, mired in mud beside the ship Hesper, and Wiscasset's attempt to salvage the familiar waterfront symbols; the Maine Wolf Coalition's hot line for reports of timber wolf sightings; the ubiquity of Bean boots, worn even by judges in court; the University of Southern Maine's School of Applied Science, which runs the state's only product-testing laboratory; a proposal to extend Interstate 95 north of Houlton; and the International Appalachian Trail (IAT) project to extend the Appalachian Trail from Maine into Canada.
