Abstract

Managed health care and tighter Medicaid and Medicare budgets are forcing hospitals to redefine themselves and their services. It is estimated that the state might lose up to a dozen of its current 42 conventional hospitals, most of them smaller, rural facilities like St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor, but that the quality of care will not decline. Hospitals will offer more outpatient services, and smaller hospitals might become community health centers. With details on how Maine Medical Center in Portland, Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, and St. Andrews expect to change.
