Abstract

"North by East" piece about Emily Stacy, 86, of East Wilton, who started operating her Emily's Restaurant from a trailer that she hauled from fair to fair in 1949, after she lost her job as a weaver in a woolen mill. Mrs. Stacy has since cut back a bit on her cookery offerings and no longer works from a trailer. When her trailer wore out and she talked of quitting, her customers demanded that the fairground operators construct buildings especially for her. She has aslo cut back on the number of fairs she attends. Now she opens for business only at the Topsham, Windsor, Norway, and Fryeburg fairs, and marvels at the fact that she is now serving the children and even the grandchildren of the customers who started with her at the beginning.
