Abstract
"North by East" piece about Dr. John W. Miner, of Robbinston on the St. Croix River, who remembers having met an old black in Mount Whately, New Brunswick, around 1918, who remembered having been hidden in the basement of a house in Robbinston before being rowed across the river into Canada in the days of the Underground Railroad. The only house in Robbinston that matches the description provided Dr. Miner is the 1828-vintage Captain Brewer House, now operated as a bed-and-breakfast by David and Estelle, Holloway. Dr. Miner's account confirms stories the Holloways heard when they bought the house.
