    Abstract

"North by East" piece on the first mosque in the United States, and perhaps in North America, which was located in Biddeford. According to Charles Butler, a Biddeford historian, in 1900 Albanian Muslims recruited to work in the textile mills of Saco and Biddeford formed a mosque in rooms above the Pepperell Mill counting house on Main Street. Butler says they continued to meet there for at least 18 years.
