Abstract

"North by East" piece reporting that Bates of Maine, a Lewiston-based textile manufacturer, now produces Southwestern Indian blankets for the Boucher Boys and the Indian, which is based in Phoenix. Bates' historic reputation for quality attracted the Boucher Boys and the Indian to Lewiston. The blankets' designs are created by Terry Enos, a Prima Indian living in New Mexico. Whereas two years bates was barely holding on with a labor force of only 48, the mill now employs 96 people, working three shifts. The Indian blankets are being sold in high-end stores from New York to Los Angeles.
