Abstract

Article on efforts to restore eastern bluebirds to the state, noting that the colorful, once commonplace birds were driven from Maine by aggressive competition from house sparrows and starlings. Nesting boxes and banding projects by volunteers like June Ficker have turned the tide in favor of the bluebirds. Lisa Paige, treasurer of the Bluebird Association of Maine, said that putting up a nesting box and monitoring it is one way a person can work to improve recovery rates.
