Abstract
"North by East" piece about Jotul USA, the Portland-based subsidiary of the well-known Norwegian woodstove manufacturer. Sales of the Jotul peaked in 1978, when 28,000 units of the basic model 602, were sold in the United States. The company suffered steep declines in the 1980s because of cheap oil, with sales falling to 1,200 stoves by 1992. According to Walter Harris, part a new management team brought into Portland a year ago, new strategies last year increased sales past the 5,000 mark, giving Jotul a solid niche in the Maine's woodstove market.
