    Abstract

"North by East" piece about York Beach's Goldenrod restaurant and candy shop, which is celebrating its centennial this summer. The business was founded in 1896 by Edward A. Tapley, who bought a small newsstand and tearoom and named it Goldenrod. The saltwater taffy, which Tapley made by hand while standing in the front window, became the Goldenrod's signature. Today, the store sells 63 tons of taffy every summer.
