Abstract

"North by East" piece on the Maine State Library's books-by-mail summer reading program, headed by librarian Benita Davis. Roughly 300,000 Mainers still live in towns without libraries or with limited library services. Davis says more than 750 children from three to fourteen years old sign up every summer for the mail-order reading program, many of them from among the more than 4,000 who participate during the school year.
