Abstract

"What's in a Picture?" 1900 photograph by George A. Neal of the clipper schooner "Emma" and her crew, in Bernard. The crew would launch a thirty-six-foot dory from the schooner and man its oars to position a purse seine around a school of mackerel. After that, they would work to dress and salt the catch before sailing to market. The "Emma," part of the Maine mackerel fleet, was built in Bath.
