    Abstract

"North by East" piece on the large, Maine-based Hannaford grocery store chain, which fired up its first 600-kilowatt generator at its Scarborough store in April, after negotiations for a discount rate from Central Maine Power bogged down. Electricity is the chain's third-highest expense, costing $8 million last year.
