    Abstract

"North by East" piece on Dr. R. Blake Whitaker, a Turner-based medical researcher and former Bates College professor, who has developed a treatment that apparently eliminates allergic reactions to everything. He noticed an unusual attribute among natives of the Amazon Basin, who showed no allergic reactions and who also had high blood levels of a certain antibody. While he was teaching at Bates, three students worked on his research project, and Whitaker patented his procedure and drug in 1985. Government approval is taking a long time. His firm Immunet is working on a similar treatment for pets.
