Abstract

"North by East" piece on Elizabeth "Betty" Noyce, who died in September at the age of sixty-five, noting that Mrs. Noyce donated an estimated $70 million to various institutions and causes in the state. Her fortune, estimated at more than $200 million at her death, stemmed from her 1975 divorce from Robert Noyce, inventor of the computer chip and cofounder of Intel Corporation. Her will provided for the continuation of her philanthropy and the completion of several ongoing projects, including construction of a public market and a parking garage in downtown Portland. She also split her 134-piece Maine art collection between the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland and the Portland Museum of Art.
