Abstract
"North by East" piece on Friends of Montpelier, the 1930s replica of General Henry Knox's post-Revolutionary War retirement home in Thomaston. The 130 volunteers in the group have given the house a new lease on life, and attendance has risen from 1,000 in 1994 to 9,000 in 1995. The state agreed to the privatization experiment in 1994 in an effort to save the house from demolition or from being turned into an office building. The Friends are now raising money for a full-time director.
