    Abstract

    "North by East" piece on Fort Knox in Prospect. George McLeod started Friends of Fort Knox to help restore the crumbling structure. The group began a dialogue with the state Department of Parks and Recreation, analyzed the problems of the deteriorating fort, and found a way to cut the state's cost of repairing the fort by 90 percent, largely by generating in-kind donations from area companies and raising funds privately. Two-thirds of the leaking roof, which was originally sod and which was badly replaced by asphalt, should be completed by September.
