Abstract
"North by East" piece International Paper's (IP) development of a recyclable, biodegradable paperboard carrier for beverage cans and bottles. The Maine legislature passed a bill two years ago authorizing a ban on plastic six-pack rings because of the danger they pose to birds and small animals that become entangled in the rings. Wil Cote, IP's program manager for environmental analysis, said resistance to the new product is coming not from the public, but from the large bottlers who have made investments in machines that handle plastic six-pack rings exclusively. Cote says the new carriers are finding acceptance among smaller bottlers of mineral water and specialty drinks seeking a niche for themselves with an environmentally friendly product .
