Abstract
"What's in a Picture?" piece about a photograph taken in the 1960s of Raymond Phillips, the "hermit of Manana," standing beside a dinghy with outstreched hands and standing on some rocks. Phillips, who died in 1975, at the age of 83, was a native of Newport who graduated from the University of Maine in 1917 and served in World War I. He eventually wound up working in New York. When his employer went bankrupt in the Great Depression, he set off aboard his 38-foot schooner for Maine and eventually bought land on Manana Island, just off Monhegan. The Portland newspapers and the "Boston Globe" ran lengthy obituaries upon his death.
