    Abstract

"North by East" piece on Bowdoin College professor and molecular biologist Carey Phillips, who sent 36 fish embryos on the space shuttle Columbia for an experiment that might help prevent birth defects. This was the third time he had sent fish eggs into orbit to gauge the effects of weightlessness on embryonic nervous systems. This time, he monitored and controlled the embryos' development remotely by computer. Phillips has been involved with the U.S. space program for some ten years.
