    Abstract

"North by East" piece on Aroostook County's $500,000 advertising campaign, designed to attract tourists. A 1991 survey estimated that northern Maine drew only 3 percent of the state's tourism spending. One ad noted, "You don't need a lighthouse to find your way," poking gentle fun at competitors to the south.
