Abstract

"North by East" piece on Richard Albert of Township 15 Range 15, who believes he is being targeted as an example by the U.S. Customs Service. As a Homeland Security measure, officials put up a new gate between his township and St. Pamphile, Quebec, where many residents attend church and buy groceries. The crossing is closed on Sundays, so Albert and other residents have been walking across the border. Remote controlled cameras caught him in the act, and he now faces two $5,000 fines. Albert and the dozen or so other residents of the township are waiting for Maine's senators and the Customs Service to come up with a solution, assuming that's possible.
