    Abstract

"North by East" piece on the temporary dismantling of the Portland Observatory on Portland's Munjoy Hill. The 240-foot-tall tower, built in 1807, has been closed since 1995, when city inspectors discovered that many of its foundation timbers were infested with wood-boring beetles. Martha Deprez, executive director of Greater Portland Landmarks, said plans call for the reopening of the tower in the summer of 1998.
