Abstract

Lincolnville's Ducktrap Bridge was built in 1919, but its approach was so steep that a new bridge had to be built atop it in 1932. Today its cosmetic deterioration masks a sound structure. Residents accuse the Maine Department of Transportation of purposefully allowing it to deteriorate so as to justify a new bridge with the widening of Route 1. Plans for its future remain uncertain.
