Abstract

"I Remember" column on Charley Gomes, a renowned Casco Bay boatbuilder, who built the "Royal Tern" in 1956 for the Alexander family who summered on Sheep Island. Although the family had ordered an eighteen-foot sloop to be built for them, Gomes instead built the larger, gaff-rigged "Royal Tern" for the family. Surprised at the substitution, the family immediately fell in love with Gomes' design.
