    Abstract

    "North by East" piece on chef Sam Hayward's upscale Fore Street restaurant in Portland, which he co-owns. In May, the James Beard Foundation named Hayward the best chef in the entire Northeast. Clark Frasier and Mark Gaier of Arrows in Ogunquit were also nominated for the honor, suggesting that places like Portland and Ogunquit have become year-round cultural centers, populated by people with sophisticated tastes.
