    Abstract

The State House dome in Augusta was built in 1910 and illuminated in 1940. In 1986 the badly deteriorated exterior lighting system was shut down, but it was restored this year and rekindled on January 5, inauguration day. Outgoing governor John McKernan, who spearheaded and partially financed the project, only got to see the new lights for a few hours before departing for Washington.
