    Abstract

    "North by East" piece on Al Hawkes, 74, former owner of Hawkes Plaza on Route 302 in Westbrook. He was successful in selling his property to a buyer who promised to keep the giant mechanical TV repairman sign that Hawkes built in 1962 and which has become a local landmark. New owner Bill Umbel loves the 13-foot sign, which Hawkes and two helpers built over half a year of working nights and weekends.
