    Abstract

"North by East" piece on an unexplained glitch that has dispatchers at the Penobscot Regional Communications Center in Bangor fielding three to five calls a day on the Penobscot County sheriff's business line from all over the country. Most of the callers have dialed 411, asked for the nearest sheriff's office, and chosen the automatic call-forwarding option. The Penobscot County sheriff's office is the only one listed in some national directories, but no one can explain why calls are coming from Texas, Kentucky, and elsewhere.
