Abstract
"The Talk of Maine" piece on the Androscoggin River, the dirtiest river in Maine and the one that inspired Senator Edmund Muskie's Clean Water Act of 1972. The newly formed Androscoggin River Alliance wants the standards for the river raised, in alignment with recent economic development and recreational river use in the Lewiston-Auburn area. A founder of the alliance, Neil Ward of Leeds, and other members have put both the Legislature and paper mills in Rumford and Livermore Falls on notice that they want the paper companies held to higher discharge standards than the Legislature has required thus far.
