Abstract
"The Talk of Maine" piece on the shortage of public restrooms in Maine's tourist towns. Wiscasset recently eliminated two porta-potties, leaving one out-of-the-way public restroom. While some towns address the growing need for facilities, others do not treat the issue seriously. Maine is attracting more day trippers, and the average age of tourists has increased. Damariscotta has two porta-potties for 10,000 tourists a day, and Bar Harbor has 22 toilets to serve more than 2 million visitors each summer. With details on a few towns that are working out creative solutions.
