Abstract
Profile of Michael Heath, 44, executive director of the Christian Civic League of Maine and successor to Jasper "Jack" Wyman, who pushed for environmental protection, AIDS awareness, and support for adding sexual orientation to the Maine Civil Rights Act. In 1994, Heath stepped in as director to allow Wyman to make a bid for governor, and then convinced the board of directors to oust Wyman after he lost the Republican primary. Heath turned the league's focus to opposing homosexuality and garnered enough support from the religious right and others to overturn two gay-rights bills. He will try to overturn a third such bill in November. Heath conflates anti-discrimination with same-sex marriage and contends that homosexuality is a choice, misinformation that Maine Won't Discriminate will try to dispel before the election.
