Abstract
Three miles south of L.L. Bean is South Freeport, a close-knit village that residents want to preserve. Most of the homes date from the 1800s, when four shipyards operated on the Harraseeket River. Storekeeper Mary Cathcart of the Village Store is determined to stay open through this winter's lean months. Although some home prices have topped the $1 million mark and demographics have changed, open space has been preserved and there has been a concerted effort to prevent new construction.
