Abstract
"The Talk of Maine" piece on a growing movement in Maine to protest plans to dispose of out-of-state construction and demolition debris (CDD) in Maine landfills and incinerators. Vermont-based Casella Waste Systems disposes of tons of out-of-state waste every year by exploiting a legal loophole and wants to expand operations. Supporters say waste generates electricity, while opponents point to the release of harmful chemicals into Maine's air. Maine is the only state in New England where clean wood is sorted from CDD and burned as a cheap fuel in biomass boilers.
