Abstract

"The Talk of Maine" piece on bill to allow the state to transfer public land to the Gardner Land Company in exchange for Katahdin Lake land that would become part of Baxter State Park. The bill aroused unexpected opposition, including that of residents in Millinocket and East Millinocket, who opposed access restrictions. A compromise eventually allowed 2,000 acres to be open to traditional uses, while the lake and 4,000 acres surrounding it would remain a wilderness preserve. The perception is that, as with a successfully defeated bear-baiting ban, residents of northern Maine are becoming more organized in opposing what they see as interference from the more populous south.
