    Abstract

"North by East" piece on how Maine was the first English common law jurisdiction in the world to change the rule that prevented defendants in criminal trials from testifying in their own behalf. In 1864, the first jury trial under the new statute was State vs. Richardson, on an indictment for murder, tried in Farmington. Samuel Richardson lost his case and died in prison.
