    Abstract

"North by East" piece on how Maine Turnpike officials are seeking to win removal from the Federal Highway Administration's proposed historic designation list, because they believe it will result in red tape for construction projects. The southern part of the turnpike, built in 1947, is the nation's second oldest, but no longer exists in its original form.
