Abstract
An article on the changing identity of Kittery, a town billed as the "Gateway to Maine." It is home to Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and is Maine's oldest town. It is closely connected to the cross-river town of Portsmouth and is becoming a place of new businesses and newcomers. Some residents think of Portsmouth as too upscale and want Kittery to remain as it is. The Foreside downtown area has been revitalized and is home to restaurants, cafes, and artists' spaces. Voters have clashed on various issues, sometimes along the fault line of old-timers versus newcomers.
