Abstract
An interview with controversial Portland native and Millinocket rafting guide turned developer, Matt Polstein, 44, owner of the New England Outdoor Center. He runs Pine Tree Camps and a restaurant near Mount Katahdin and serves on the Millinocket Town Council, where his ideas for developing the local economy have drawn hate mail. He is proposing a $15-million eco-tourism resort that would lure 400 visitors at a time to Baxter State Park. He addresses the benefits of a "high-value" wilderness experience, the flaws in the Maine Woods National Park proposal, drawing tourists by upgrading amenities, the Plum Creek development proposal, and how he would work with residents in bringing change to the area.
