    Abstract

"The Talk of Maine" piece on downtown development in Bath, where prices are 30 percent lower than in Portland. City Planner Jim Upham sees the trend as a sign of "urban resurgence" rather than bedroom-community sprawl. Some residents have opposed a likely-to-succeed proposal called New BathPort, which would replace the waterfront BathPort complex with 28 high end condos, requiring a height variance and incorporating the city's first stretch of riverfront walkway. Last year, Bath was named one of a "Dozen Distinctive Destinations" by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Developers estimate that most of their buyers will be from the area.
