Abstract
"The Talk of Maine" piece on cattle farmers in Maine, who are increasing, partly thanks to the pioneering of organic beef production by Wolfe's Neck Farm in Freeport. Pineland Farms Natural Beef in New Gloucester is the for-profit spin-off of that venture. The company hopes to build its supply lines with construction of a new feedlot in Fort Fairfield and has sent letters to more than 700 farms in Maine encouraging them to get into the beef business. The industry is helping to keep marginal potato fields in production by using them for hay or ensilage. Pineland Farms currently supplies 500 different outlets.
