Abstract
Last spring a new electrical cable was laid between Rockport and the island of Vinalhaven, replacing one that was failing. The 14 losses of power in 2004 before the replacement, one of which lasted two days, affected fishermen and residents. A cable was unrolled from a massive spool and fed into a hydraulic plow that dug six feet below the ocean floor. The previous cable could be snipped by cargo ships dragging snagged lobster traps. Rates for the Fox Islands Electric Cooperative have gone from 18 cents per kilowatt-hour to 30 cents, but most residents consider the price worth it.
