Abstract

Maine's new poet laureate, Betsy Sholl of Portland, teaches at the University of Southern Maine and at Vermont College and is noted for her humility and generosity as a teacher. With six other poets she co-founded a cooperative press, Alice James Books, in Cambridge, Mass., now housed at the University of Maine at Farmington. She has taught in prisons, and in her new, unpaid position will likely increase her outreach as a poet.
