Abstract
Mainers have traditionally suffered more on-the-job injuries than the national average, but with an increased emphasis on safety, workplace injuries and workers' compensation rates have declined. The Maine Employers' Mutual Insurance Company (MEMIC), created in 1993, provides safety training and consultation. Fishing, logging, farming, truck driving, structural iron and steel work, and construction are among the top 10 most dangerous occupations. With details on how MEMIC works with drivers and truckers, builders and contractors, and employees at Bath Iron Works; how the Maine Criminal Justice System teaches police to stay safe; and how safety conditions in Maine's long-term care industry have worsened.
