Abstract
"North by East" piece on a missing 700-lb. bronze bell that formerly hung in Wingate Hall at the University of Maine at Orono. In 1943 a fire destroyed the bell tower, and the bell was placed in front of Oak Hall. At some point it disappeared. Chet Rock, associate dean of the College of Engineering, wanted to install the bell in a proposed plaza and walkway to be named for legendary engineering dean Paul Cloke, who was serving at the time of the fire. Rock tracked the bell to a cupola atop the Fogler Library, where no one had been aware of its existence.
