Abstract
"The Talk of Maine" piece on the increased use of soup kitchens and food pantries in Maine, particularly by working poor families and elderly people on fixed incomes. Portland alone has five food pantries and an equal number of meal programs, and there are hundreds in towns all over Maine. It is estimated that only a third of those who need help are served. With details on the operations at Manna Ministries in Bangor, run by Bill Rae; and the Good Shepherd Food Bank in Auburn and Brewer, which is directed by Rick Small and supplies 570 agencies throughout Maine.
