Abstract
"The Talk of Maine" piece on the filming of Steven King's "The Mist" in New Orleans, because filming in Maine would have been too expensive. A remake of "Charlotte's Web," with its Maine setting, was filmed in Australia. Just seven film projects were completed in Maine between 1945 and 1987. In the past 20 years, the Maine Film Office and the volunteer Maine Film Commission have attracted 58 films, television features, documentaries, commercials, and catalog shoots. States like Louisiana and New Mexico and countries like Canada, Australia, and New Zealand offer rebates and incentives, and Maine has to focus on its authenticity and reputation for quality to draw filmmakers.
