Abstract

Bruce Potterton, 71, directs SummerKeys in Lubec, an adult music program with no admission requirements. Up to 250 students attend each summer, bringing income to the struggling economy. In 1991, the longtime piano teacher at Manhattan's Turtle Bay Music School and Henry Street Settlement School bought a house in Lubec, conceived his idea, and drew 50 students the first summer. Now teachers recruited mainly from the New York area teach an assortment of instruments. In addition to Potterton's three houses, six houses have been bought by students, 65 percent of whom return to the school. Painter Shawn Costello recently started an art program called Summer Brushes.
