Abstract
Maine Huts & Trails in Kingfield is pairing groomed cross-country trails with comfortable backcountry accommodations, and within seven years, executive director Dave Herring envisions 12 lodges and 180 miles of trail from Bethel to Moosehead Lake. Motorized traffic will be prohibited. So far, three huts are built or planned. Larry Warren, former president of Sugarloaf/USA, founded Maine Huts & Trails and spent about $1.6 million to secure the rights to run his 36-mile trail between Carrabassett and The Forks. The huts are sited to reduce visibility. Lance Tapley, founder of Friends of Bigelow, says the concept strikes a balance between recreation and preservation.
